Of course, it would be highly remiss of me not to mention <strong>Istv&aacute;n Szepsy<\/strong>, one of Hungary&rsquo;s most important winemakers, with his son, <strong>Istv&aacute;n Szepsy Jr<\/strong>, following in his footsteps. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/szepsy-winery-3949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Szepsys<\/a><\/strong> are a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/tokaj-wine-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokaj<\/a><\/strong> winemaking family dating back to the 16th century, whose name is closely linked to the history of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/oldalak\/tokaji-aszu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokaji Asz&uacute;<\/a><\/strong>. As well as creating this amber nectar, Szepsy was the first producer to really start making dry Tokaj wines too. They aim to produce the best wines without compromises, and they succeed, as their wines are among the best in the Tokaj Wine Region.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/szepsy_bor-hu.jpg?1649235354351\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another member of the old guard is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/bock-estate-3689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J&oacute;zsef Bock<\/a><\/strong>, one of the figureheads of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/villany-wine-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vill&aacute;ny Wine District<\/a><\/strong>. If you&rsquo;ve never tried a Bock wine, you&rsquo;ve never tried Vill&aacute;ny. Bock, who first bottled wines in 1987, now produces about a million bottles per year and represents the high-quality side of old-school Vill&aacute;ny with a wide range of wines, a comfortable four-star hotel with spa facilities and a restaurant. The Bock chapel-like cellar is a must-see &ndash; their top wine &lsquo;Capella&rsquo; is named after it. (Cover picture)<\/p>\n<p>Known as the &ldquo;flying Hungarian wine wizard&rdquo;, another of Hungary&rsquo;s most influential and passionate winemakers was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/gal-tibor-winery-3847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tibor G&aacute;l<\/a><\/strong>, who sadly died in a car accident in 2005. He famously worked for Super Tuscan Ornellaia in Bolgheri. One of his missions was to revive Egri Bikav&eacute;r, which is being continued by his son <strong>Tibor G&aacute;l Jr<\/strong>, who is now reinventing Bikav&eacute;r through single-vineyard Bikav&eacute;rs, with exciting wines coming out of S&iacute;khegy, Pajados and Nagy-Eged. His contemporary, youthful wine bar, Fuzio, in the centre of Eger is also worth a visit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/galtibor_bor-hu.jpg?1649235433881\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/takler-wine-estate-3813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ferenc Takler<\/a><\/strong> is one of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/szekszard-wine-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Szeksz&aacute;rd Wine District&rsquo;s<\/a><\/strong> most renowned wine producers, now helped at the Takler Wine Estate by his two sons, Andr&aacute;s and Ferenc &ndash; the latter is now responsible for the winemaking, which he feels is best accompanied by some Bruce Springsteen. They are known for their big, bold wines from the Bordeaux varieties and increasingly their high-quality <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/kekszolo-fajtak-vorosbor-stilusok\/kadarka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kadarka<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/kekszolo-fajtak-vorosbor-stilusok\/kekfrankos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K&eacute;kfrankos<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/black-grape-varieties-red-wine-styles\/egri-bikaver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bikav&eacute;r<\/a><\/strong>. The Takler Mansion with its spa is also a great place to lay your head.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/takler_bor-hu.jpg?1649235504726\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mention should also be made of the cycling &lsquo;King of Ros&eacute;&rsquo; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/duzsi-winery-3572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tam&aacute;s D&uacute;zsi<\/a><\/strong>. As well as making high-quality Szeksz&aacute;rd reds, he, now assisted by son Tam&aacute;s, has also scooped up numerous awards both domestically and internationally for his ros&eacute;s, thus earning himself the above moniker. Now in his seventies, Tam&aacute;s is still active in the vineyards and also goes out training on his bike each day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/duzsi_bor-hu.jpg?1649235556222\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The &lsquo;terroirists&rsquo;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hungary boasts great winegrowing terroir, and many regions are now rediscovering their top vineyard sites and producing single-vineyard wines to reflect their differences.<\/p>\n<p>In the Tokaj Wine Region, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/balassa-winery-3589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Istv&aacute;n Balassa<\/a><\/strong>, also viticulture director at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/grand-tokaj-3631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand Tokaj<\/a><\/strong>, is obsessive about the region&rsquo;s different terroirs, bottling numerous, extremely high-quality, single-vineyard wines under his own label Balassa Winery. He produces both dry and sweet wines from 11 different terroirs in 30 parcels to showcase the incredible diversity of Tokaj&rsquo;s unique terroir. He&rsquo;s also an excellent photographer, so follow him on Instagram to see Tokaj reveal itself through his beautiful photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/balassa_bor-hu.jpg?1649235613162\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not only Furmint is a great translator of terroir, K&eacute;kfrankos is pretty adept at it too. In Szeksz&aacute;rd Wine District, young <strong>Zoli Heimann<\/strong>, son of <strong>Zolt&aacute;n Heimann Sr<\/strong>, one of the region&rsquo;s biggest personalities, has been revamping some of the wines at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/heimann-family-winery-3662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heimann Family Winery<\/a><\/strong>, creating a new line &ndash; Heimann &amp; Fiai &ndash; which focuses on terroir-driven wines, in particular single-vineyard K&eacute;kfrankos and Kadarka. He claims crafting the best Kadarka in the world as one of his missions. Incidentally, the hands behind the classic Heimann wines are not those of Zoli senior, but rather of his talented wife <strong>Agn&eacute;s Heimann<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/heimann_id-_heimann_zoltan%2C_ifj-_heimann_zoltan_es_heimann_agnes_(1)_bor-hu.jpg?1649235724088\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Charming <strong>Gy&ouml;rgy L\u0151rincz Sr and Jr<\/strong> and the wines of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/st-andrea-vineyards-and-winery-3945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Andrea Vineyards and Winery<\/a><\/strong> in Egerszal&oacute;k are loved by everyone. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/black-grape-varieties-red-wine-styles\/egri-bikaver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Egri Bikav&eacute;r<\/a><\/strong> trailblazers, they also craft elegant, modern wines based on local varieties, seeking to create terroir-specific wines with character. Their top single-vineyard Bikav&eacute;r and Csillag wines are setting a fine example for the Eger wine district. Their 2017 Nagy-Eged Egri Bikav&eacute;r Grand Superior scooped up 97 points in the Decanter World Wine Awards!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/st_andrea_bor-hu.jpg?1649235777604\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The experimenters and the natural<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In atmospheric foodie village K&ouml;v&eacute;sk&aacute;l in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/balaton-highlands-wine-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Balaton Highlands Wine District<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Gyula P&aacute;lffy <\/strong>and sons, <strong>Gyula P&aacute;lffy Jr and Attila P&aacute;lffy<\/strong> craft lovely mineral <a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/white-grape-varieties-white-wine-styles\/olaszrizling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Olaszrizling<\/strong> <\/a>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/white-grape-varieties-white-wine-styles\/furmint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Furmint<\/a><\/strong>, but they&rsquo;ve also been dabbling in orange wine. Attila has come up with some funky P&eacute;t-Nat named P.A.N.K.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/palffy_bor-hu.jpg?1649235853983\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong> The characters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Hungarian winemaking scene boasts some real characters too. Imagine a larger-than-life guy DJing and organising festivals and concerts, as well as wine tasting, at his winery in an old tufa quarry on the edge of Eger. This is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/bolyki-winery-4188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J&aacute;nos Bolyki<\/a><\/strong>, or Jani. His approachable, well-made wines are always a winner, and the quirky labels and playful names that adorn his wines have won him success in both Hungary and abroad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/bolyki11_bor-hu.jpg?1649235897128\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, high up on his wine terrace on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/nagy-somlo-wine-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soml&oacute; Hill<\/a><\/strong>, you can meet <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/spiegelberg-artisan-winery-4524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephan (Istv&aacute;n) Spiegelberg<\/a><\/strong>, half German, half Hungarian, who produces some of the Soml&oacute; Wine District&rsquo;s most characterful wines. Istv&aacute;n himself is quite a character. Born in Berlin, he used to be a BMW crash test driver in Munich, plays Gregorian chants to his wines in his tiny cellar and is now probably the first in Hungary to install some Georgian Qvevri.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/bor.hu\/media\/uploads\/hirek_2022\/04_aprilis\/hungarian_winemakers_you_should_know_about_final\/spiegelberg_bor-hu.jpg?1649235943372\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Hidden names<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are also plenty of winemakers, whose names do not feature on the wine bottle, but who are definitely worth a mention. Winemaking legend <strong>&Aacute;kos Kamocsay<\/strong>&rsquo;s name is hidden behind the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/hilltop-neszmely-winery-3723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilltop Neszm&eacute;ly Winery<\/a><\/strong>, a modern winery overlooking the Danube whose varietally pure wines, high volume but outstanding quality, have achieved great success both in Hungary and abroad; &Aacute;kos was even named Winemaker of the Year in the UK in 1997. In the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wine-regions\/etyek-buda-wine-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etyek-Buda Wine District<\/a><\/strong>, you should watch out for the wines of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/etyeki-kuria-winery-3692\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etyeki K&uacute;ria Winery<\/a><\/strong>, expertly crafted by winemaker <strong>S&aacute;ndor M&eacute;r&eacute;sz<\/strong>, who makes what is arguably Hungary&rsquo;s best Pinot Noir. You will, however, find his name on the &lsquo;M&eacute;r&eacute;sz S&aacute;ndor Projekt&rsquo; wines, an experimental range, which includes a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/white-grape-varieties-white-wine-styles\/pinot-gris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinot Gris<\/a><\/strong> orange wine. Artisanal winemaker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/wineries\/somloi-vandor-pince-4486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tam&aacute;s Kiss<\/a><\/strong> is behind the elegant <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/feherszolo-fajtak-feherbor-stilusok\/juhfark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Juhfark<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/feherszolo-fajtak-feherbor-stilusok\/harslevelu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H&aacute;rslevel\u0171<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/winesofhungary.hu\/grape-varieties\/feherszolo-fajtak-feherbor-stilusok\/tramini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tramini<\/a><\/strong> from the boutique, organic Soml&oacute;i V&aacute;ndor winery.<\/p>\n<p>I think I have, perhaps more than, exhausted my 14 &ndash; there are some fathers (and a mother) and sons too. You&rsquo;ll note I haven&rsquo;t really included any ladies.
