Introduction

Research Institute for Viticulture and Oenology is part of the first University in Hungary founded by King Louis the Great. Based on several centuries old vineyards and winery of bishop's estate, the scientific workshop was created by the Minister of Agriculture in 1949. Nowadays, our Institute has the second biggest grape genebank in Europe. Its priorities include research, development, counselling and education. The Institute was entrusted with the modernisation and improvement of hillside vineyards in the region, and with the development of new grape varieties, clones, new technologies both in field of viticulture and oenology.
