At the 2026 Volcanic Wine Awards international wine competition, the Hungarian wines selected by Wines of Hungary achieved outstanding success. At the competition, which focuses on volcanic wines, 90% of the Hungarian wines entered won gold, silver, or bronze medals, or received a recommendation—reinforcing the country’s leading role in the world of volcanic wines. Among the gold medal-winning wines, the Tokaj wine region had a particularly strong showing, but wines from Balaton, Somló, and Eger also received prestigious recognition, well reflecting the diversity of Hungary’s volcanic wine regions.
For the Hungarian Wine Marketing Agency, the promotion and international positioning of volcanic wines will remain a priority in 2026. Our professional team selected the 40 dry and 10 naturally sweet wines to be entered into this prestigious competition by taking into account decades of experience, tasting notes from recent years, domestic and international competition results, and current wine consumption trends in Hungary’s primary target markets.
These outstanding results not only demonstrate the diversity of the category, but also show that the international wine community—including the world-renowned Jancis Robinson—recognizes the exceptional quality of Hungarian wines, which sends an important message to consumers and provides even more crucial feedback to the Hungarian wine industry!
The general public will have the opportunity to sample several of the award-winning wines at the International Volcanic Wines Conference 2026 in June, where a masterclass tasting led by John Szabo, MS, will showcase the winning wines. You can register for the event in New York HERE!
